PUBLIC SAFETY IN GHANA

On January 4, 2003, COGA convened an emergency meeting and its agenda
included "Public safety in Ghana with a focus on crime prevention". This was
proposed by Mrs. Margaret Ampofo, Chairman of COGA who had just returned from Ghana.

In response to sentiments expressed vigorously by Ghanaians in this
metropolitan area, and in various Ghanaian communities throughout the United States, the Council, by unanimous vote, has embarked on a project to raise public consciousness about the scourge and spread of Armed Robberies that have afflicted the motherland, and, in the process, to raise funds to purchase, principally, communications equipment for donation to the law-enforcement authorities in Ghana.

A Committee, headed by Paul Gyau (Chairman),and Gil Jones-Quartey
(Vice-Chairman), has been set up to develop the protocols of this endeavor.
It submitted an initial Report to the full Council on February 8, 2003,
detailing the tasks to be performed to achieve the expected goals. They
include (i) discussions with the Ambassador, to establish a partnership;
(ii) collection of data on the extent of the problem; (iii) hosting a Town
Hall meeting at the Embassy, tentatively, on May 31, 2003, and (v)
fund-raising.

The community is encouraged to submit ideas on this matter to any of the
COGA Representatives listed elsewhere at this website. Together, we should
be able to find a solution to this rather unfortunate situation confronting
Ghana at this time. From all indications, armed robberies and other related
criminal enterprises are so rampant thought the country that no municipality
(urban, suburban, small town, rural, etc.) is immune.

LET'S ALL DO OUR PART TO HELP!!
